How to make… a bee hotel

Help solitary bees by putting a bee hotel in your garden - it's simple to make and offers vital nesting space.

1 You will need a tin can (or wooden box) and a selection of natural hollow tubes – bamboo canes and plant stems are ideal.

2 Cut the stems to the same length as the tin, and pack them tightly inside. Try to include different stem widths.

3 Play with the design. For instance, you could try glueing or tying several tins together to make a pyramid.

4 Choose a sunny spot and hang your hotel 1m from the ground, placed against a wall or fence to stop it spinning. Make sure the stem entrances are clear of debris, and keep the hotel dry.
